Franklin's Mast

ca1972 Gallery

Bevis M. Griffin, a dynamic vocalist, drummer, and songwriter, spawned from the classic Texas rock scene of the early 1970s, and continuing throughout the new millennium to the present, has always been years ahead of his time.

Franklin's Mast was one of Austin's first and best Hard-Rock touring attractions...at the time these photos were taken I was only 18 years old.

“I was very fortunate to meet Chris Bailey at Raul's, where we subsequently formed our first noteworthy project, The Skyscrapers,”

The Skyscrapers ca. 78-79 were a local sensation the very same year The Continental Club reopened after being dormant for 25 years...these pics were shot by the famous photographer Scott Newton, (at the time he was just beginning his career), now his photos adorn the interior walls of the ACL Moody Theater...Small World.

By 1980, my collaborations w/ Skyscrapers guitarist CK Bailey evolved into the formation of The Bats, my initial debut as a full-fledged exotic Rock n' Roll sex symbol. Subsequently, as my new music began to veer away from the predominant Punk/New-Wave influences of that era, Banzai Kik emerged.

By 1980, my collaborations w/ Skyscrapers guitarist CK Bailey evolved into the formation of The Bats, my initial debut as a full-fledged exotic Rock n' Roll sex symbol. Subsequently, as my new music began to veer away from the predominant Punk/New-Wave influences of that era, Banzai Kik emerged as one of the most original Hard-Rock-Heavy Metal acts in Texas. After opening shows for metal giants like Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, and Ted Nugent, we quickly developed a strong local following and I began to generate a considerable amount of regional press as Texas' most controversial hard-rock performance of the early 80's. Soon thereafter, I relocated to NYC.

Ok, by 1985-87' I've successfully aligned myself with a great personal manager, (after 2 previously failed attempts); and began recording a series of high-quality demos at New York's Media Sound Studios. During this time, Prince was reigning supreme following the release of Purple Rain, Madonna's star was rapidly ascending, and artists like David Lee Roth, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, and Guns N Roses were beginning a strong siege upon the record charts. This is also about the time that I became a founding principle member of the notorious socio-political activists, The Black Rock Coalition established in 1986 by legendary Living Colour guitarist, Vernon Reid. I made my public NYC debut on Feb. 1987 at the iconic punk-rock mecca, CBGB, while premiering the New York version of Banzai Kik to a record-breaking sell-out audience.
